Winter Ecology and Snowshoe to Carter Notch

January 28-30
Joe Dodge Lodge, Carter Notch Hut

Snowshoe through one of the most spectacular mountain passes in New England, where the reward for your journey includes the tremendous panorama of the Mt. Washington Range and the chance to experience a cozy winter hut.

Learn the basics of winter travel, safety and snowshoe techniques in this fun guided tour. The trek will be led by AMC Senior Interpretive Naturalist Nancy Ritger. She will bring you deep into the backcountry to explore the changes in the forest, study animal tracks, and discuss the plants’ ability to survive the cold.

Your adventure begins with an overnight at Joe Dodge Lodge, where Nancy will go over the itinerary for the next day. After a hearty breakfast in the morning, your knowledgeable and friendly guide will lead you on a 3.8-mile trek to Carter Notch Hut. After arriving at the hut, enjoy a dinner prepared by the group, followed by an evening sitting by the woodstove or taking advantage of the (hopefully) clear winter skies to identify favorite winter constellations. Enjoy another delicious breakfast the following morning, and another snowshoe expedition before descending for the day.

Minimum age 18 (16 if accompanied by an adult).
