February 18-20
Highland Lodge, Lonesome Lake Hut
Here’s a great way to experience an AMC Hut in winter with your kids. Snap on your snowshoes and follow AMC Senior Interpretive Naturalist Nancy Ritger on this family-friendly midweek trek to a backcountry hut at Lonesome Lake. We’ll explore the forest, listen for winter birds, and follow animal tracks. We’ll also refine our snowshoeing techniques and learn about winter ecology in the White Mountains.
Our trip begins with an orientation session and overnight at AMC’s Highland Center in beautiful Crawford Notch. Enjoy a hearty breakfast the next morning before we set out on our 1.6-mile journey through a hardwood forest to Lonesome Lake Hut. Nancy will help you listen for wintertime birds and follow animal tracks as we consider the strategies of winter survival for these White Mountain creatures. Lonesome Lake welcomes us with snow-covered spruce and the spectacular backdrop of Franconia Ridge. Our final destination of the day is AMC’s backcountry hut at Lonesome Lake where steaming hot chocolate and a warm wood stove awaits. We’ll then settle in for the night at the hut, enjoying a delicious home-cooked dinner, stargazing, and a comfortable bunk.
The terrain is moderate and the pace will be comfortable. Beginners welcome and encouraged to participate with plenty of time to explore. Minimum age is 10 (children age 10-15 are eligible for *Child rates). Reserve today—call 603-466-2727.
