Historic Profile: Carter Notch Hut

  • Carter Notch began as a shelter in 1904. Photo: AMC ArchivesStarted as a log cabin shelter in 1904.
  • Rebuilt as a hut in 1914, (the oldest building in the hut system).
  • Helped to begin the AMC’s plans for a system of huts, envisioned then as a triangle of camps a few days apart.
  • Opened for the winter starting in 1973.
  • Once used a cave for the cold storage of butter, margarine, and cheese.
  • Haunted (or so they say) by the ghost of "Red Mac" MacGregor, hut manager in the 1920s, who pulls pranks on the hut crew.
