Historic Profile: Carter Notch Hut
Started as a log cabin shelter in 1904.
Rebuilt as a hut in 1914, (the oldest building in the hut system).
Helped to begin the AMC’s plans for a system of huts, envisioned then as a triangle of camps a few days apart.
Opened for the winter starting in 1973.
Continues to use a cave for the cold storage of butter, margarine, and cheese.
Haunted (or so they say) by the ghost of "Red Mac" MacGregor, hut manager in the 1920s, who pulls pranks on the hut crew.
