Built in 1888, making it the oldest hut in the system and the oldest mountain hut in the United States. The first overnight guests stayed the following winter in February 1889.
Instituted cabin fees for the first time in 1906—a mere fifty cents per night!
Expanded frequently to keep up with demand—additions were made in 1906, 1911, 1922, and 1929.
Suffered a fire in 1940 when gasoline for the gasoline-electric power plant ignited, but recovered quickly and was rebuilt by the following year.
Known traditionally for its spirited crews, and referred to as "Madison Madhouse" at least as early as 1939 (sometimes just "Mad" for short).
