Planning Your Visit
- Weather: weather conditions can vary widely during any season in the White Mountains. You can check weather forecasts, backcountry conditions, and avalanche reports here. You can also call our Pinkham Notch Visitor Center at 603-466-2721 for questions on trail conditions.
- Books and Maps: Plan to carry a current map, guidebook, and compass on your trip. We recommend the AMC White Mountain Guide, available in the AMC Online Store or by calling 800-262-4455. You can also get hiking trip ideas and plan routes using White Mountain Guide Online
- Quiet Hours: please be respectful of other guests and observe quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
- Alcohol: Beer and wine are available during meal times at the Highland Center. State law requires that any personal alcoholic beverages be consumed only in the guest’s private guest room, and be consumed in a responsible manner.
- Smoking: smoking or open flame are not allowed in or near any structure.

Public Transportation
AMC’s Hiker Shuttle offers transportation from the Highland Center to all major approach routes to the huts in summer and fall. The Hiker Shuttle also picks up and drops off at the Irving gas station on Main Street in Gorham. Reservations are required – call 603-466-2727.
Concord Coach Lines offers daily bus service between Boston Logan Airport and Boston’s South Station (Amtrak and MBTA Commuter Rail) and Lincoln, NH. From Lincoln, Shuttle Connection can provide van service to the Highland Center. Reservations are required, with a minimum 48 hour advance notice.
Shuttle Connection also offers airport service to the Highland Center from Boston Logan and Manchester Airports. Reservations are required, with a minimum 48 hour advance notice.
Driving Directions
AMC encourages carpooling to its lodges and huts. You can post a rideshare request on our rideshare bulletin board.
From central and south-central New Hampshire (Manchester, Concord, etc.):
- Take Interstate 93 North to Route 3 North (Exit 35).
- Take Route 3 North to Route 302 East (near Twin Mountain).
- Take Route 302 East approximately 10 miles to the Highland Center, located roadside right on Route 302. Continue past the Highland Center for Crawford Depot.
From eastern and southeastern New Hampshire (Portsmouth, etc.):
- Take Spaulding Turnpike North to Route 16 North.
- Take Route 16 to Route 302 West (in Glen).
- Take Route 302 West approximately 10 miles to the Highland Center, located roadside right on Route 302. Continue past the Highland Center for Crawford Depot.
From Boston and its suburbs:
- Take Interstate 93 North to central New Hampshire.
- Follow directions above for central New Hampshire.
From Portland, Maine: Take Route 302 West to the Crawford Notch Depot Visitor Center, located roadside right on Route 302.
From Montreal:
- Take Autoroute 10 East to Autoroute 55 South (north of Magog).
- Take Autoroute 55 South to Interstate 91 South (at US/Canada line).
- Take Interstate 91 South to Route 105 East (by Derby, Vt.).
- Take Route 105 East to Route 3 South (in North Stratford, N.H.).
- Take Route 3 South to Route 302 East to (near Twin Mountain).
- Take Route 302 East to the Crawford Notch Depot Visitor Center, located roadside right on Route 302.
From New York City (and Hartford, Conn., or western Massachusetts):
- Take Interstate 95 North (Connecticut Turnpike) to Interstate 91 North (by New Haven, Conn.).
- Take Interstate 91 North to Route 302 East (Exit 17 in Vermont).
- Take Route 302 East to the Crawford Notch Depot Visitor Center, located roadside right on Route 302.
