Checkpoints are open 6:00AM – 9:00PM, 7 days a week, in season. Gates close at 9:00 PM. You will be asked to pay a discounted gate fee for AMC guests* at the time of reservation.

Planning Your Visit
- Weather: weather conditions can vary widely during any season in the Maine Woods. See current backcountry conditions. Call the camps directly if you have any questions about road or trail conditions.
- Books and Maps: Plan to carry a current map, guidebook, and compass on your trip. We recommend the Maine Mountain Guide, which includes a Gulf Hagas map and trail descriptions. You may also be interested in the Southern Piscataquis Regional Recreation Map and Guide, published by AMC, which shows other nearby trails, put-ins, and natural and cultural resources in the area. Both are available at the AMC Online Store or by calling 800-262-4455.
- Quiet Hours: please be respectful of other guests and observe quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
- Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages are permitted, and should be consumed in a responsible manner.
- Smoking: smoking or open flame are not allowed in or near any structure.

- Little Lyford and Moose Point Cabin Guests: Bring your confirmation showing your gate fee payment* (Memorial Day through Labor Day only).
- Comforters and pillows are provided, bring your own sheets in summer, and appropriately rated sleeping bag in winter. Each individual cabins, LLLC bunkhouse, and Moose Point Cabin have a wood stove.
- Medawisla and Little Lyford have hot showers year-round; bring your own towel, washcloth, soap, and shampoo.
- Bring appropriate seasonal clothing for hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, snowshoeing, or skiing.
- Dinner, breakfast, and make-your-own trail lunch are included in your lodge room rate (unless you have selected the lodging-only option at Medawisla) – you may wish to bring your own snack items
- Lodging-only "housekeeping" guests at Medawisla (spring, summer, and fall only) – refrigerators and kitchens are provided in your cabin. You may wish to purchase food items in Greenville before you arrive. The Kokajo Trading Post also has basic supplies.
- Bring a headlamp for walking to and reading in your cabin or bunkroom at night
- Families may wish to bring books and games – we have some available
- For Your Stay at Moose Point Cabin (Self-service year-round)
- Bring the combination for the gate provided by the AMC Reservations department

- Kitchen with gas stove, pots, pans, utensils, dishwashing detergent, dishwashing pail provided. Bring food required for your stay in a large cooler with ice. The nearest grocery store is a one-hour drive away in summer and fall. In winter, you will need to be self-sufficient.
- Bring charcoal if you wish to use our grille.
- Gas lamps are provided. Bring a headlamp for reading and going outside.
- Clothing and Gear for Outdoor Activities: having the right equipment during your trip will greatly enhance your outdoor experience in the White Mountains. It is important to wear proper footwear, and carry warm clothing, foul-weather gear, food and water, and other essentials.

*Gate Fees
Please note that from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, there is a gate fee for the use of the Katahdin Ironworks/Jo-Mary (KIJM) Forest. Adults age 15-70 visiting AMC’s Little Lyford and Moose Point Cabin are required to pay a reduced gate fee of $10 per person per visit. This must be purchased with your reservation and a printed confirmation must be presented to the gate attendant. Otherwise the regular (higher) gate fees will apply. Please also note that the gates close at 9:00 p.m., and that for safety on logging roads, motorcycles, ATVs, and horses are not permitted in the KIJM Forest. The gate fee is not required for visits to Medawisla, which is located outside the KIJM forest and is accessible by public roads.

Summer Directions to Little Lyford
The AMC Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins (LLLC) are located 16 miles east of Greenville and 19 miles west of Route 11 outside of Brownville. Detailed directions are below, but you can follow the blue squares with reflective arrows to Little Lyford on the Greenville and Katahdin Ironworks roads. Please note that the access roads are not paved and are subject to washouts and potholes. Roads may not be passable by cars with low clearance. Please limit your speed to 25 mph, and yield to logging trucks. There is no fuel available once you leave the state highways. Call in advance for road conditions during spring, fall, or when storms are expected.
From the west via Greenville: Take I-95 north to Exit 157 (old 39) at Newport, Route 7 north to Dexter, Route 23 north to Guilford, then Route 15 North to Greenville. At the traffic light in the center of Greenville, proceed north one block and turn right onto Pleasant St. After 2 miles the road becomes gravel. Eleven miles from Greenville, stop and register at the Hedgehog checkpoint (gate fee charged). Proceed 1.8 miles further and turn left. Go another 1.1 miles, bear left again, then go 1 mile to the LLLC entrance on the right. Follow the blue squares with reflective arrows for Little Lyford.
From the east via Brownville: Approach the KI (Katahdin Ironworks) Road on Route 11 either southbound from Millinocket (26 miles) or Northbound from Milo (12 Miles). To get to Milo from the south, take I-95 north to Exit 199 (old 53) at Old Town. Continue north on Route 16 to Milo, then take Route 11 north towards Brownville. Signage for the Katahdin Ironworks Historic Site (KIW) may be missing, so check your mileage. Turn west onto the KI Road. The KI checkpoint is 6.3 miles from Route 11. Stop and register (*fee charged). From the gate go 10.6 miles. Bear right and go 1.1 miles, then bear left and go another 1 mile to the LLLC entrance on the right. Follow the blue squares with reflective arrows for Little Lyford.
Summer Directions to Moose Point Cabin
From the Hedgehog Gatehouse (the KIJM gatehouse closest to Greenville and identified on the LLLC directions above), go 2 miles to the KI (Katahdin Ironworks) Road. Turn right onto the KI Road and go 3.4 miles to Chairback Mtn Rd. Turn right and go 2.5 miles until you see the aluminum gate on the right for Moose Point Cabin. You do not need to check in at Little Lyford Pond. Follow the yellow squares with reflective arrows for Moose Point Cabin.
Winter Directions to Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins and Moose Point Cabin
It is not possible to drive directly to Little Lyford or Moose Point Cabin in the winter. Whether you are taking advantage of AMC’s transportation services or skiing in directly, you must arrange to meet Little Lyford staff at Northwoods Outfitters (past blinking light in the center of Greenville, green building on right hand side of road - parking across the street at Katahdin Boat) at 11 a.m. on the first day of your visit. They will then take or lead you to the winter parking lot (approx. 10 miles from Greenville) for the 6½-mile ski (subject to change due to logging activities or road conditions) into Little Lyford or Moose Point Cabin. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to reach the winter parking lot safely. Snowmobile transport for you and/or your gear from the winter parking lot to Little Lyford or Moose Point Cabin is available at extra cost. Advance reservations for the exact number of people requiring transport are required, and may be arranged with the AMC Reservations office. Call 207-280-0708 for further details. Please note that personal snowmobiles cannot be accommodated at Little Lyford or Moose Point Cabin.
Spring, Summer, Fall Directions to Medawisla Wilderness Lodge
Medawisla is located 25 miles northeast of Greenville, Maine. From points south, not including Bangor, drive North on I-95 to Exit 157 (old 39), the Newport exit. Take a left onto Route 7 to Dexter. In Dexter, take a left on Route 23 North to Guilford. Keep a sharp eye and check your map since these roads can be confusing and are not always well marked. At the end of Route 23 take a left onto Route 15 North to Greenville. There is a blinking yellow light in the middle of Greenville. Northwoods Outfitters will be on the right.
From Greenville, go through town and continue north on Lily Bay Road up the east side of Moosehead Lake 20 miles to Kokadjo. From Kokadjo keep left with the Baxter State Park sign for approximately 1.5 miles until you reach our sign on the right. Turn right and drive for 5.3 miles to a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and look for our sign on the left. Turn left at the sign and follow the road to the camp entrance.
From Bangor, take the Broadway Street (route 15) exit off I-95 and follow route 15 north to Guilford, turn right onto Route 15/16 at Elm Street and continue to follow Route 15 to Greenville.
From Portland, take Route 295 North to I-95 and follow the above directions.

Winter Directions to Medawisla Wilderness Lodge
From Kokadjo keep left at the Baxter State Park sign for approximately 1.5 miles until you reach the Medawisla sign. Turn right and proceed to the parking lot. From there it is a short walk to the camp. Depending upon road conditions, a four-wheel-drive vehicle may be helpful to reach the winter parking lot safely.
