Getaways at Mohican Outdoor Center

These events are designed to provide our guests with an opportunity to join with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Many weekends feature specific themes such as Irish dancing, digital outdoor photography, and yoga. Each event will be hosted by an AMC volunteer leader and will generally run from Friday night to Sunday afternoon although some mid week getaways are available too. Rates start out at just $115 and include your lodging, some meals, and your program.

Fri-Sun, Oct 23-25. A Mindfulness Retreat, Weekend Getaway at Mohican.  Lilian Zwyns and Walter Lyons,  students of meditation and mindfulness, who have been inspired by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen monk and peace activist, will lead our weekend.  Lilian, ordained into Thich Nhat Hanh’s core community, The Order of Interbeing, and Walter will guide us in understanding, developing and maintaining a daily mindfulness practice, leading into meditation.  Oh yes, bring your hiking boots too!  Fee $115/M, $127/NM includes 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, Sat. Fri-Sun, Oct 30 - Nov 1. Young Members Howling Halloween Weekend Getaway at Mohican.  Join fellow young members, ghouls, goblins, and ghosts, as we explore haunted trails and the possessed pond and otherwise enjoy the beautiful setting of the Mohican Outdoor Center. The Center is located on the fabled Jersey Devil side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  Do as much or as little as you like but be sure to bring your Ouija board and be prepared to have a frightfully fun weekend full of outdoor activity accented with Halloween inspired entertainment! There will be a Saturday night costumer party with prizes for the best and second best costumes as well as an October fest themed happy hour. Fee $115/M, $127/NM, includes two nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, 2 happy hours (BYOB) & Saturday dinner.

Fri-Sun, Nov. 6-8. Map and Compass Weekend Getaway at Mohican.  It's good to find yourself. In this course, put your map and compass skills to work and build confidence as you experience real-life bushwhacking and triangulation situations in indoor and outdoor exercises. Fri-Sun, Nov. 6-8. Slovenian Heritage Weekend Getaway at Mohican. International folk dance workshop, fun with proverbs, klobase (sausage) making demonstration, a Slovenian film (sub-titled in English) and more. Easier "Mount Triglav at Mohican" hike (a true Slovene has summited Slovenia's highest mountain)! Fri-Sun, Nov. 20-22. Yoga and Hiking Weekend Getaway at Mohican.  Come to Mohican to harmonize body, mind and spirit with yoga and hiking. Hike and Folk-dance Weekend Getaway at Mohican. Chill your legs on the trails or warm them with international  folk-dance, as you like. All levels are welcome, all dances taught. Fri-Sun, Jan 8-10.  SOLO Wilderness First Aid at Mohican.  The WFA course will teach you how to deal with common medical incidents and accidents that occur in the backcountry.  It stresses safety, preparation, crisis avoidance, and the treatment of problems such as blisters, sprains, hypothermia, heat disorders, protection from the elements and more.  This course provides an important level of understanding about recognizing and treating medical emergencies or injuries and also discusses long-term patient care, a reality of backcountry travel. The WFA is a 16-hour course and can be used to re-certify a WFR level of training.  CPR certification can be obtained for $35.00 during the course.  Please inform the staff at Mohican if you desire this training prior to course start date.  L SOLO.  Fee:  $237M, $261N/M includes 2 nights lodging, meals starting Sat breakfast, instruction and certification.  To register call 908-362-5670.

Fri-Sun, Jan 22-24. Intro to Winter Hiking/Snowshoeing Wkend Getaway at Mohican.  Are you a 3-season hiker who is considering expanding into winter activities this year? This is your chance to learn about clothing, equipment, and safety issues that go beyond 3 season conditions. Snowshoes and crampons will be available for rental if needed.   Come join us as we practice yoga for the very inflexible to athletic bodies (Yoga for Every Body), hike in the winter wonderland, and spend the evenings by the fireplace socializing, and possibly singing and/or engaging in a creative endeavor.  You can do as much or as little as you want. Come get acquainted with some of your fellow AMC members while enjoying a weekend of hiking, socializing, entertainment, and just plain relaxing by the fire. Fri-Sun, March 5-7. Homebrew and Hiking Wkend Getaway at Mohican. Join us for 2 days of exploring the backcountry sections of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Depending on the conditions we'll hike or snowshoe to the various ponds and/or waterfalls in the DWNRA.  Friday night there will be an intro to home brewing with samples of the various styles of beer.  Saturday we'll bottle a batch during happy hour, while sampling the same brew made two weeks before.  If you're a home brewer and would like to participate and share some of your work, please contact Kathy Scranton.  Fee $127/M, $140/NM includes 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts and Sat happy hour & dinner.  Activity fee for brewing materials is $20.00 payable Friday night. Fri-Sun., Mar 12-14.  Acting for Singles Wkend Getaway at Mohican.   Bring out your inner actor ‘acting weekend’ for Singles.  Actress and drama teacher ‘Narani O’ will lead the group in acting and improvisational exercises that will loosen one up and get us into acting.  On Sat., after a morning hike we will continue with the acting exercises and maybe some scripted scenes.  Participants will be able to take risks in a safe and non-judgmental environment.     On Sat. night, we can entertain each other by ‘performing’ some scenes.  For beginners and academy award winners alike.  Fee $127M, $140NM includes instruction, scripts, 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, Sat happy hour and dinner.  Host:  Alexis Kiriazides and Narani O’Shaughnessy, Questions? Fri.-Sun., Apr 2-4. Rails to Trails Hiking Wkend at Mohican. Join us for a weekend of hiking on old rail lines converted into hiking trails. One day will be spent hiking the Lackawanna Cutoff from Blairstown, NJ to Portland, PA, which will cross two cement viaducts. The next day will be spent hiking the "Lehigh & New England" rail line from Columbia to Blairstown, NJ. Car shuttles will be provided each day. Mason Logie will give a history of each rail line.   Let’s see how many species we can count while wandering in the glorious spring woods around Mohican at the height of the spring migration.  Orioles, Tanagers and warblers for sure.  Beginner birders very welcome.  Instruction in birding basics will be given.  This may be the beginning of a lifelong pleasure. Fri-Sun., May 7-9.  Rock Climbing for Beginners, Mohican. This two-day program introduces you to basic rock climbing and “top-roping” techniques. The goal of this course is to offer the first time climber (or experienced climbers who would like to learn more about the technical side of climbing systems and climbing techniques) the information and skills that allow you to become comfortable on the rock. By focusing on the skills needed to become a self-sufficient rock climber, our aim is to bring you closer to a level of understanding of climbing that enables you to continue to climb on your own. Instruction covers climbing techniques, belaying skills, anchors, rappelling, climbing equipment (including equipment inspections and limitations) and classic top rope setups. Topics covered will include composition, how to use digital camera features, optimizing the image in Adobe Photoshop Elements, and making the print.   Participation Optional. The Mohican Outdoor Center is located in the 70,000 acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area, only 1 and ½ hours from New York City and less than 3 hours from Philadelphia. The center boasts a network of hiking trails including the Appalachian Trail, the Coppermine Trail, the Rattlesnake Swamp Trail and the Kaiser Trail.  The area offers guests many options for both short and long trips. Mohican is located on the shores of picturesque Catfish Pond, canoes and kayaks can be rented from the Visitor Center.  Cabins are available year round with bunk rooms that sleep 2 to 6 people. All lodging has access to bathrooms, kitchens, and living room areas.
