Activities Near Gorman Chairback

  • Hiking – Hike to the southern end of Gulf Hagas, the Grand Canyon of Maine. Hike to the Appalachian Trail and explore nearby Third and Fourth Mountains.

  • Paddling – Grab one of our canoes (free for guests) and explore Long Pond or a number of other remote ponds in the area. Just a short paddle from camp lies a beautiful sandy beach perfect for a picnic or a midafternoon siesta. There you will find picnic tables and cool calm waters inviting you to take a dip. Our camp staff can provide directions.

  • Skiing – Ski lodge to lodge, or loop trails near Gorman Chairback, including new trails near Long Pond and Henderson Brook.

  • Snowshoeing -- Snowshoe up to Third Mountain on the Barren-Chairback Ridge along the Appalachian Trail.

  • Dogsledding -- take a day trip or or lodge-to-lodge overnight adventure with a local guide

  • Fly-fishing – enjoy fly-fishing nearby ponds and rivers for land-locked salmon and native brook trout.

  • Mountain Biking – Our wooded roads and trails offer a variety of biking opportunities.  Check with our lodge manager for current road conditions and closures.

  • Wildlife watching – Our 66,000 acres of permanently protected forest and many remote ponds, provide opportunities to see moose, loons, eagles, Canada lynx, red fox, and river otters. Birdwatchers will find many boreal birds, like black-backed woodpeckers and spruce grouse. Ask the lodge manager for wildlife "Hot Spots" or set out to find your own.

Public Day Use: as part of our Maine Woods Initiative, AMC is committed to providing public access. All trails and ponds within our 66,000-acre conservation and recreation property are open to the public for hiking, paddling, fishing, and hunting. Access to the area around Little Lyford and Gorman Chairback is managed through the KI-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest, and gate fees may apply.
