Activities Near Little Lyford

  • Hiking – hike nearby Laurie’s Ledge and Indian Mountain for views of Mt. Katahdin, or hike two miles to the head of Gulf Hagas, the “Grand Canyon of Maine.” Day hikes to White Cap Mountain and Chairback Mountain on the Appalachian Trail are a short drive away.  Cool off at day's end in our riverside swimming spot.

  • Paddling – grab one of our canoes (free to guests) and explore our Little Lyford Ponds or a number of other remote ponds. Our camp staff can provide directions.

  • Skiing – explore the Pleasant River Valley on our trail network, or ski lodge-to-lodge for a multi-day adventure. Lodges are ski-in only in winter.

  •  

  • Snowshoeing -- enjoy the winter beauty of Laurie's Ledge or Indian Mountain by snowshoe (loaners available to guests)

  • Dogsledding – take a day trip or lodge-to-lodge overnight adventure with a local guide

  • Fly-fishing - enjoy flyfishing for native brook trout on Little Lyford Pond or the West Branch of the Pleasant River, on your own or with a registered Maine Guide.  Eight remote ponds on our property offer brook trout fishing, with canoes available for guests.

  • Mountain Biking – our woods roads and trails offer a variety of biking opportunities - you can bike to Long Pond, grab one of our canoes, and explore.  Check with our lodge manager for current road conditions and closures.

  • Wildlife Watching -  our 66,000 acres of permanently protected forest, and many remote ponds, provide opportunities to see moose, loons, eagles, Canada lynx, red fox, and river otters.  Birdwatchers will find many boreal birds like black-backed woodpecker and spruce grouse. Ask the lodge manager for wildlife "Hot Spots" or set out to find your own.

Public Day Use: as part of our Maine Woods Initiative, AMC is committed to providing public access. All trails and ponds within our 66,000-acre conservation and recreation property are open to the public for hiking, paddling, fishing, and hunting. Access to the area around Little Lyford and Gorman Chairback is managed through the KI-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest, and gate fees may apply.
