The AMC combines hiking, camping, and more with dedication to education and nature conservation.
AMC's outdoor club activities offer members a world of recreational enjoyment while promoting the organization's mission of outdoor education, conservation, and volunteerism. We promote the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and hiking trails of the Appalachian region, believing that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth at the same time that they provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and economic and ecological health for the region.
Chapter activities — an essential part of the AMC experience.
The AMC offers twelve regional chapters: the Berkshire, Boston, Connecticut, Delaware Valley, Maine, Mohawk Hudson, Narragansett, New Hampshire, New York/North Jersey, Southeastern Massachusetts, Washington, DC, and Worchester chapters. Each chapter of AMC's outdoor club offers an abundance of local volunteer-guided recreational activities and educational programs. They also provide an opportunity to participate in volunteer work such as trail maintenance, research, and political activism, while introducing you to a community of like-minded citizens dedicated to the goals of the AMC.
Our chapters can get you started enjoying outdoors activities including local walks, day hikes, bicycling, sailing, rock climbing, and canoeing and kayaking. Joining a chapter is a great way to learn to backpack, use a map and compass, plan a overnight kayaking trip, or cross-country ski or snowshoe for the first time.
A major offering of the AMC outdoor club is its creation of numerous lodging destinations, ranging from comfortable mountain lodges complete with hot and cold running water, shared or private rooms, delicious dinner and breakfast, and retail shops to cabins, campgrounds, and campsites offering tent platforms, with and without shelter. Carefully placed and maintained mountain huts, dotting the Appalachian Trail a day's hike from one another, offer dinner and breakfast and a comfortable bunk during their full-service season.
