Updates to Published AMC Books
From time to time, information covered in our books may change in the field. For example, a trail may be relocated. Since a new edition of the book may not be immediately available, this page will regularly offer updates to our most popular AMC books. Bookmark this page and check here often, especially before heading out on a trip.
If you find that a route described in one of our guides has changed or a description contains an error, please send us an email.
AMC’s Best Day Hikes in the Berkshires; posted September 29, 2009:
- Page 2, Trip 1, The Dome: To reach the trailhead, please follow these directions: From the intersection of Routes 7 and 2 at the rotary in Williamstown, follow Route 7 north for 1.5 miles to Sand Springs Road. Turn right onto Sand Springs Road and follow it approximately 0.2 mile to a three-way intersection. Continue straight (the middle road) on Sand Springs Road. After driving approximately 0.25 mile more, reach White Oaks Road (no sign). Turn left and follow it for 1.1 miles to a wide gravel pull-off on the right approximately 0.3 mile north of the Massachusetts-Vermont border (where the pavement ends). There is space for approximately six vehicles. The trailhead is on the right.
- Page 18, Trip 4, Mount Greylock State Reservation, East Side—Cheshire Harbor/Gould Trails: Although the Cheshire Harbor Trail is not technically the shortest trail to the summit with regard to distance (the Thunderbolt Trail is shorter but considerably steeper), it is the shortest of those covered in the guide, and for most hikers the easiest route to the summit.
To reach Mount Greylock State Reservation from the north, follow these directions: Take Route 8 south to Adams and turn right onto Maple Street at the statue of President McKinley. Follow Maple Street for 0.4 mile and turn left onto West Road. Follow West Road for 0.6 mile to West Mountain Road on the right. Follow West Mountain Road for 1.6 miles to a circular gravel parking area. The trailhead is on the right.
- Page 38, Trip 8, Mount Greylock and Ragged Mountain Via the Bellows Pipe Trail: To reach the trailhead, please follow these directions: From Route 8 (State Street) and Route 2 in North Adams, follow Route 2 (West Main Street) west for approximately 1.2 miles and turn left onto Notch Road (note brown and white Mount Greylock State Reservation sign). Follow Notch Road for 1.2 miles to near Mount Williams Reservoir where Notch Road turns sharply left. Turn left and follow Notch Road for another 1.1 miles to a point where the road bears right, but continue straight ahead into a small gravel parking area with space for approximately six vehicles."
The map symbol indicating a summit for "Bellows Pipe" is misleading. However, a lean-to is located where the trail makes a sharp right turn (north).
- Page 89, Trip 17, Spruce Hill: There has been a change to the Busby trailhead location. A kiosk (with an affixed sign that reads Busby Trail) and bench are now situated at the new trailhead. The trail originates at the left end of the kiosk and runs for approximately 250 feet through a birch, beech, maple woodland to a trail junction where you should bear right.
AMC White Mountain Guide, 28th Edition; posted November 7, 2008
Dear Reader:
Based on reader feedback, we have created an updated index for the White Mountain Guide, 28th edition, that more clearly shows how to find the main description of each trail. We have bolded the page numbers associated with trail descriptions in this version. Other references to trail names are not bolded. This new version is formatted in the same size as the original book, allowing readers to cut out the index and insert it in the back of their guidebooks if they wish. We will use this format in future reprints of this edition of the White Mountain Guide.
Thank you for your ongoing interest in the White Mountain Guide.

Quiet Water Maine posted October 11, 2006
Page 5, Trip 2, Shapleigh, Smarts, and Hansen Ponds: Please do not set into Shapleigh Pond via the access point indicated in the trip details and map as this is private property. Much of the land surrounding the ponds is private property, and those hoping to canoe or kayak in the area do not have permission to access these waterways via private property. Until we are able to verify the correct access point on public land, the AMC strongly suggests our readers conduct their outdoor activities in other areas.
