Remember when they said if you could walk you could cross-country ski? Forget about it. But this is true: if you can walk, you can snowshoe. And if you can snowshoe, northern New England is a premier winter playground, whether you want to wander through a fragrant pine stand or take a wind-ripping trek to a daunting above-treeline summit. Who needs a lift ticket? Just strap on snowshoes and off you go. OK, maybe with a bit of trepidation at first. But once you get your snow feet, national forests, state parks, and various other protected lands can offer up winter’s quiet, its chilling solitude, its clear panoramas. A favorite hiking trail in summer takes on a frosty new face under Old Man Winter’s domain. Ready to give it a go?
