Nestled deep within Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness, AMC’s Little Lyford Pond Camps radiate a Transcendental vibe. True, the works of Emerson and Thoreau make no mention of their musings here, but this area, with its offerings of solitude and natural beauty is just the place for a Transcendental moment

Not much has changed since the camps first opened in 1874. Tucked 15 miles east of Greenville, and 20 miles northwest of Brownville, Little Lyford Pond Camps allow visitors to immerse themselves in Maine’s peaceful backcountry—with winter ushering in even more opportunities for quiet exploration.

Thousands of acres surround the camps, and a network of trails beckon snowshoers with the promise of mountain views. Not to mention an end-of-the day indulgence in the cedar sauna.

For a serene snowshoeing excursion, we’ve detailed three of the area’s best trips—so strap on your snowshoes, and get ready to create your own Transcendental experience.
