How to Safeguard Highlands Critical Treasures
  • Look for them in your backyard – for a map of Critical Treasures in each state, see: www.outdoors.org/magazine.

  • Spread the word about these breathtaking areas by leading hikes through them. Contact Jennifer Heisey at jheisey@outdoors.org. Look for scheduled chapter trips on trips.outdoors.org by selecting keyword “highland.”

  • Learn more about 23 Pennsylvania Critical Treasures through “Hike the Highlands” cards created by AMC and the Wildlands Conservancy. The set of 23 pocket-sized cards provides directions, descriptions, photos, and trail maps for a wide range of hikes. Learn how to get these free hiking cards by contacting AMC’s Mid-Atlantic office at 610-868-6906. Additional cards are planned for the future.

  • Join a celebration May 16, 2009 at noon, in Riegelsville, Pa., where the Highlands Trail recently reached the state border. AMC is leading an effort called the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network, which will extend the trail into eastern Pennsylvania. AMC, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, and the city will host the May event, which will include local hikes, bike rides, canoe/kayak demonstrations, and refreshments. Learn about the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network project >>

  • Join AMC’s Conservation Action Network and get involved in speaking out for protection of the Highlands. Visit www.outdoors.org/conservation.
