More Fire Tower Hikes Near AMC DestinationsBy Lisa Densmore AMC Outdoors, July 2011 The feature story "Above It All" highlights 10 fire towers in the Northeast, including several located near AMC destinations. Here are four other towers worth trekking to, each near an AMC lodge. Catfish Tower The Catfish Tower is a giant fire lookout, 100 feet high and still staffed during periods of high fire danger such as early spring and fall. Near AMC's Mohican Outdoor Center, it is known for its view of the Catskills and Poconos as well as the rhododendrons, cliffs, and wildlife along the way to it. Carrigain Viewing Platform While this former fire tower not far from AMC's Highland Center at Crawford Notch has been replaced by a stockier viewing platform, this high point on the southeastern edge of the Pemi offers the best viewing in New Hampshire of peaks more than 4,000 feet high; you can see 43 of the 48. Wildcat Viewing Platform The vertical climb to the viewing platform atop Wildcat D, the second of five subpeaks along the Appalachian Trail north of AMC's Joe Dodge Lodge and Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, rewards with an unobstructed view of the Presidential Range. Mount Toby Fire Tower Noted for its biodiversity, waterfalls, and glacial Cranberry Pond, Mount Toby's best feature for hikers may be its fire tower. Located in the Mount Toby State Demonstration Forest, near AMC's volunteer-managed Noble View Outdoor Center and Holyoke, Massachusetts, the tower lifts you above the wooded summit to a commanding view of the central Connecticut River Valley, reaching to mid-Vermont and New Hampshire. |
