Accessible AMC

Compiled by Tim Jones

AMC’s commitment to providing access to all is evident at many of its destinations, from a high-traffic visitor’s center to a hut situated at 3,800 feet.

Public spaces at AMC’s Joe Dodge Lodge and Pinkham Notch Visitor Center as well as the Highland Center at Crawford Notch are fully accessible. The Macomber Family Information Center at Crawford Notch Depot also has accessible public restrooms.

In addition, Cold River Camp is wheelchair-accessible, Three-Mile Island Camp includes an accessible cabin, restroom, and trail providing access to the Main House and the dock, and Knubble Bay Camp on the Maine coast has an accessible canoe put-in.

Zealand Falls Hut, Galehead Hut, and Greenleaf Hut are all fully accessible structures (though they are accessed via trails not specifically designed to be accessible). As other huts and lodges are upgraded and renovated over time, AMC expects to address appropriate standards of accessibility.

In 2008 alone, Noble View Outdoor Center welcomed 322 individual visitors through programs for people with various disabilities. Among the programs using the camps were Multicultural Community Services of the Pioneer Valley, Outdoor Explorations, Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps, and Frank’s Troop 11 of the Boy Scouts of America, a troop for special-needs youth and adults assisted by University of Massachusetts, Amherst’s Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

In addition, AMC’s Youth Opportunities Program has partnered with the Deaf Youth Outdoor Leadership Program of the Massachusetts State Association of the Deaf to train some of their youth workers.

This listing doesn’t even begin to touch upon the volunteer efforts of the chapters and individual members, including such projects as the first wheelchair accessible section of the Appalachian Trail, which was created with the help of members of AMC’s Connecticut Chapter.
