The days of hiking in suits with ties (for the men) or flannel dresses (for the ladies) are long past, making way for wicking, windproof synthetics. Over the years, outdoor gear has been fashioned with materials ranging from the silk used in hot-air balloons to the titanium used in spacecraft. Advertisements from the journal Appalachia show just how far today’s outdoor clothing and equipment has evolved from that of the past.
