Submitting to Appalachia

AppalachiaFounded in 1876, Appalachia is the AMC's mountaineering and conservation journal, published twice a year in June and December.

Appalachia welcomes nonfiction submissions on the following topics: hiking; trekking; rock climbing; canoeing and kayaking; nature; mountain history and lore; and conservation. We recommend reading a sample issue before submitting materials. Samples are available for $9.95 per copy. To request a sample copy, write to Appalachia, 5 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02108, or email us with this form — just choose "Books and Appalachia Journal" from the list of categories.

Deadlines
Writers should submit unsolicited material by December 1 for the June issue, and by June 1 for the December issue. Because we publish only twice per year, writers should understand that accepted pieces might appear anywhere from six to 18 months after acceptance.

Format
Articles generally run between 500 and 3,000 words, and must be typed and double-spaced. Electronic submissions are welcome and may be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at christine.woodside@gmail.com.

Artwork
Photographs or drawings accompany most of our articles and are usually provided by the authors. We also publish a limited number of stand-alone photos that evoke the mountains and welcome high-quality freelance submissions.

Poetry
Original poems about the above topics are also welcome. Shorter poems are preferred. Only eight poems are published per issue, which makes this the most competitive section of the journal; on average, one in 50 submissions is accepted.

Editing
All work is subject to editing. We make every effort to review editing decisions with authors in the early stages of production, but deadlines make last-minute communication with authors impossible.

Payment
As a nonprofit journal, we cannot pay for unsolicited material. Authors receive two contributor copies.

Web publication
Excerpts from each issue are regularly published on this Website after the issue has been mailed. Those excerpts will then be archived.

When sending your materials by mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Mail to: Appalachia Editor-in-Chief, 5 Joy St., Boston, MA 02108. You may also email materials to the attention of the Appalachia Editor-in-Chief at christine.woodside@gmail.com.
