What you’ll see: Champlain Mountain is a popular wildlife-viewing spot due to its pair of nesting peregrine falcons. A classic Acadia hike up steep pink granite to spectacular mountain and ocean views.

  • NPS Rating: Moderate, with one short, strenuous section
  • Distance: 3.3 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1,100 feet
  • Estimated Time: 2.5 hours

What’s in the area:

  • Active beaver pond
  • With a good pair of binoculars, it is also possible to spot harbor porpoises, harbor seals, and minke whales in Frenchman Bay.
  • Look for warblers, phoebes, and flycatchers and abundant waterlilies.
  • Bald eagles and other raptors frequent the thermals around Champlain Mountain

Getting There

  • This hike begins at the Tarn parking area, 2.2 miles south of Bar Harbor on Maine Route 3. Across Route 3 from the parking area look for a granite staircase marking the beginning of the Beachcroft Trail.
