What you’ll see: The possibilities for sea kayaking and tidewater canoeing are limitless from Knubble Bay, literally a turntable of rivers giving access to commanding bays, lonely islands, secluded coves, and busy coastal towns.

What you’ll experience:

  • Trip Mileage: 12 miles round trip
  • Tidal range: Tides change at different times in the tidal rivers, so make necessary adjustments. Strong winds can alter the time of high and low tide by as much as one hour.
  • Charts and Maps: NOAA #13293 at 1:46,000; the Appalachian Mountain Club route map for Beal Island and Knubble Bay Camp
  • Access: The AMC’s Knubble Bay Camp

What’s in the area:

  • Knubble Bay Camp
  • Beal Island Campground with a hiking option when wind and tide keep you ashore
  • Colonial-era settlement with 2 wells, a graveyard, and the foundations of the last inhabited house on Bath Island
  • Maine Maritime Museum in Bath

Getting There

  • Follow US 1 through Bath and across the Kennebec River Bridge. Just beyond the bridge, turn right onto ME 127 and proceed 5.8 miles to a paved road intersecting from the left. This is Robinhood Road and is marked by a sign reading Robinhood Marine Service, Inc.—Cape Dory Trawlers. Go 1 mile and turn left onto Webber Road at the large white Robinhood Meeting House (it looks like a church). Follow Webber Road 1.2 miles to the first right turn. Note the AMC marker on the Residents signpost. Follow this road (Jewett Road) to the end at Knubble Bay Camp (KBC), about 0.6 mile, turning right at each fork. The road gets more rutted the closer you get to Knubble Bay Camp.
