AMC Recommended Trips – Narrow River (Intermediate Paddling in RI)

What you’ll see: A picturesque paddle in a rich and diverse natural habitat. The watershed area also includes a tidal inlet, a salt marsh, an estuary, and a pond.

What you’ll experience:

  • Difficulty: flat water and some quick water
  • Distance: 5.0-mile loop
  • Estimated Time: 2.5 hours
  • Location: South Kingston and Narragansett

What’s in the area:

  • John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge
  • Gooseberry Island
  • A variety of wildlife, including mute swans, mallards, black ducks, egrets, herons, ibis, least tern, plovers, foxes, rabbits, and deer
  • Rare plant species

Getting There

  • From RI 138, take the exit for RI 1A south into Narragansett. Follow RI 1A (Boston Neck road) for 6.6 miles to Starr Drive. Turn right onto Starr Drive and go 0.25 mile to the boat ramp at the end.
