What you’ll see: Great Island in Wellfleet is one of the most remote areas on the Cape. The island has high dunes, pitch pine forests, and a wide expanse of tidal flats that at low tide are home to the famous Wellfleet oyster.

What’s in the area:
- Site of an 18th century whaler’s tavern
- Jeremy Point is one of the most productive plover breeding grounds in the Northeast as well as a haul-out site for harbor and gray seals
- Numerous picnic sites
- Billingsgate Island, once a fishing community that was overtaken by sand and tides
Getting There
- Head into Wellfleet Center, off US 6, and follow signs for the harbor. Take a right at the marina onto Chequesset Neck Road. After you cross the bridge, to the left is a small turnoff into the access area. If you reach the parking lot for the Great Island Trail, you’ve gone too far.
