AMC's research team is dedicated to providing information, analyses, and scientific expertise in support of our overall mission. Our ongoing work is aimed at preserving our natural environment, identifying crucial natural resources, and enhancing recreation opportunities.

Mountain Watch
An exciting new program that turns visitors to our White Mountain huts and lodges into "citizen scientists" who aid in the collection of data that measures the ecological health of our mountains.

Conservation Mapping and Planning
A leader among conservation organizations, AMC uses modern mapping technology to analyze the regional landscape, in order to identify and conserve the most important ecological and recreational resources in the Northeast.

Interactive Mapping
From alpine zones and land sales to roadless areas and conservation projects, our new Interactive Mapping Service helps you understand the important natural landscapes of the Appalachian region and the conservation challenges and opportunities that face them.

Recreational and Interpretive Maps
The AMC's first hiking maps were hand-drawn — today we use the latest mapping technology to create maps for hikers, paddlers, and skiers.

Air Quality
We're working to reduce air pollution in the Northeast by monitoring air quality and watersheds in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Alpine Ecology and Stewardship
The AMC actively promotes the protection of fragile alpine zones — the areas above treeline — which are among the rarest northeastern ecosystems.

Rivers
Our work in river protection focuses on improving the ecological health of rivers and providing access to recreational opportunities for paddlers.
