AMC maintains over 70 miles of hiking and ski trails on its Maine Woods property. Our proximity to the Appalachian Trail and to other nearby public and private lands offers more hiking opportunities for those willing to drive to the trailhead. AMC's Maine Mountain Guide
White Brook Trail (from Little Lyford) to the summit of White Cap Mountain involves a 16-mile drive on logging roads to reach the trailhead. Turn left out the camp road, and travel the KI road for 10 miles. Turn left just after the bridge, drive nearly six miles. Please park well off the road where the two streams cross. Walk this road 1 mile to a wood lot. From this yard the White Cap-Hay Mountain sag is clearly visible. A blue blazed trail leaves the left side of the road and climbs the southern slope toward the sag through a heavily logged area. The distances from the road at the wood yard to White Brook crossing is 0.5 mile. Another 0.5 mile takes you to the Appalachian Trail. From there hike 1.1 mile up a steep trail to the summit. Estimated time from the wood lot to the summit is 1 hr 30 min. On the summit there are panoramic views from the open ledge. Take in Saddleback, Little Spruce, Baker, Big Moose, Hay and Big Spencer Mountains, along with the vast lake country to the north, rising to the Katahdin Range. The view is one of the finest in the state.
Chairback Mountain (from Little Lyford): Drive out of Little Lyford to the main road, turn left and drive 2 miles to the Greenville Road intersection. Stay straight on the KI Road by driving east toward Gulf Hagas for about 4.5 miles to the lower Gulf Hagas parking lot. From here you take a short side trail (.2 mile) to the Appalachian Trail. Follow the AT south as it climbs a short way on a hauling road, then turns sharply left. At 1.7 miles the AT reaches the top of a ridge, and a blue-blazed side trail leads right 0.2 miles to East Chairback Pond. Continue over a series of ridges, and the last half-mile of the climb rises over a very steep talus slope to reach the summit. From the summit, there are outstanding views of the White Cap Range, Baker, and Elephant Mountains. Total distance to the summit from the parking lot is 2.25 miles.
