Become a Volunteer Naturalist

For more than 20 years, AMC Volunteer Naturalists have offered natural Volunteer Naturalistshistory programs to backpackers and hikers staying at AMC destinations. Naturalists draw on their own expertise, which can range from alpine ecology to logging history to wildlife management. Although diverse in their backgrounds, they all have a common appreciation for the complexities of nature, a desire to share their knowledge, and a dedication to the conservation of our natural resources. Through the Naturalist Program, the AMC promotes wise and responsible use of our natural resources by educating backcountry users and encouraging a deep sense of awareness for the mountain environment, including the ecology, social history, and resource management of the White Mountains. The program also serves to increase public awareness of AMC's mission.

Who Should Apply
The individuals who will be most successful as Volunteer Naturalists are those who:

  • Have a friendly, outgoing, professional manner and experience working with the general public in a recreational setting.

  • Are AMC members.

  • Have a strong background in natural history, physical sciences, and/or White Mountain social history.

  • Have a strong interest in current environmental issues.

  • Feel comfortable speaking in front of both large and small audiences and answering any questions they may have.

  • Are excited to represent the AMC, whether on the trail or at a hut, by answering questions and helping hikers in need.

What They Do
As a naturalist, you will take on rewarding responsibilities:

  • Attend the Naturalist Weekend held every May for a nominal fee. The event is required for new naturalists but also open to veteran naturalists. During this orientation, you will meet other naturalists, share expertise, and learn program specifics. Scheduled sessions include interpretative skills, wildlife ecology, plant identification, bird behavior and identification, White Mountain cultural history, and an update on AMC research and policies.

  • At the the high mountain huts: Offer a one-hour lecture or nature walk each afternoon, evening and next morning of your stint.  Afternoon session may focus on a walk, or working with a group of children on their Jr. Naturalist book.  In the morning session, you will focus on things to look for on the trail, impending weather, or trail conditions, etc.

  • Cardigan Lodge: Lead natural history walks and hikes, assist the staff Naturalist, and function as overall host to visitors.

  • Evening Program Presenter: Provide an evening program for guests and visitors at one of our destinations.

  • Be available to the public to answer questions, whether on the trail or at the destination. To do so, volunteers wear a nametag provided by the AMC, are familiar with the area in which they are volunteering, and have a basic understanding of outdoor safety.

  • Be relied upon to complete an evaluation form on each visit and submit it to supervising staff.

  • Volunteer a minimum of two days during the year.

  • Enhance the way our visitors experience the mountains! Being a naturalist is an excellent opportunity to make a difference!
