Close to Boston, New York, and Montreal, this spectacular mountainous terrain offers beautiful scenery and a wealth of recreational opportunities.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire, only a few hours' drive from Boston, New York, and Montreal, are a favorite destination for many thousands of people a year. The jagged peaks, pristine lakes, streams, and rivers, and wide range of outdoor recreational activities offer the perfect getaway for harried city dwellers.

Rising from a flat plain, these steep mountains, which stretch east to west in the northern portion of the small state of New Hampshire, offer alpine, Nordic, and telemark skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing in the winter; and hiking, backpacking, fishing, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities the rest of the year.. Increasingly, visitors to these mountains are concerned about preserving these spectacular places. This is where the Appalachian Mountain Club comes in.

The AMC — Guardians of New Hampshire's White Mountains for over a Century

The Appalachian Mountain Club was founded in 1876 to promote the enjoyment, protection, and sensible use of the Northeast Appalachian region including the White Mountains. The AMC is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States, with 90,000 members in 12 chapters. It offers many courses, organized hikes, and other excursions in New Hampshire's White Mountains, and offers a broad range of roadside mountain lodges and backcountry huts that are a great value — a room, meals, and programs are included with your stay. AMC strives to operate its huts, lodges, cabins, and campsites in an environmentally friendly way, from using recycled building materials to alternative energy sources.

The AMC offers courses in specific outdoor skills as well as opportunities to learn about the unique plants and animals of the region, leadership training, winter camping, and much more. Many of the programs are family friendly, designed specifically for families with children under the age of 13. Also available are summer adventure camps designed for teens.

Get Really Involved — Take Part in Our Volunteer Activities.

Many of our members involve themselves in volunteer activities ranging from maintenance of the many miles of trails in the mountains to leadership positions, while others prefer to participate in the AMC's extensive advocacy for land and riverway conservation, both at the chapter and national levels. Volunteers also help us monitor the air quality in the White Mountains for levels of ozone, haze, and acid rain, pollutants that threaten the health of the forests, lakes, and streams.

If you love New Hampshire's White Mountains, join the Appalachian Mountain Club today. You'll enjoy a wealth of education and recreation opportunities, all at great discounts, while contributing to the support and preservation of this unique natural resource.
