Experience high adventure in protected forest areas with the AMC.
AMC's wilderness programs offer exciting adventure in some of the most beautiful, unspoiled areas in the country.
The Appalachian Mountain Club leads more than 8,000 trips a year in the Northeast, as well as to select destinations throughout the U.S. and internationally. Many of those trips involve traveling to remote wilderness areas to experience amazing recreational opportunities. In addition to guided trips, we offer programs to learn outdoor skills such as map and compass reading, winter hiking, and outdoor photography. You can also become involved in our winter camping, mountaineering, and survival programs; or learn and practice wilderness first aid.
Our outdoor education programs prepare you for survival in the wilderness.
Many of our outdoor skills programs provide valuable guidance and skills essential to the successful enjoyment of our more adventurous trips. You can learn beginning backpacking, including detailed instruction in backpack and gear choices, food preparation, safety, and many other topics, then take that knowledge and participate in one of our backcountry hikes into remote wilderness areas. Or learn beginning winter camping — essential knowledge of shelter, clothing, food, and more — then tackle a winter hiking, backpacking, or snowshoeing trip. Learn paddling techniques by participating in one of our canoeing, kayaking, or guided whitewater trips.
The Appalachian Mountain Club operates huts, camps, and campsites in remote wilderness locations, and utilizes these destinations as a base for many of our outdoor wilderness programs. You may find yourself in a rustic, full-service sporting camp like Little Lyford Pond Camps, located deep in the 100-mile Wilderness of the Maine woods; or stay in one of our mountain huts located along the Appalachian Trail and other locations in New Hampshire's White Mountains.
The AMC's wilderness programs are a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of unspoiled lands while respecting their importance and fragility. The Appalachian Mountain Club is committed to sustainable recreational use of wilderness in ways that minimize the impact on the environment, so you can be assured that, when you take part in an AMC experience, you are enjoying yourself in ways that conserve the land you care about so much.
