For a unique adventure, join AMC for one of our cold weather outdoor trips.

Outdoor winter camping offers a unique perspective on the natural world. Whether you want to stay in one of our full-service lodges and make day trips hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or snowboarding near the lodge, or you prefer to backpack into a remote backcountry location and rough it in a rustic camp or your own winter tent, you'll see your surroundings in a way you never could in the spring, summer, or fall.

Our outdoor education program includes workshops in winter outdoor skills such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing; one winter camping trip gives you the opportunity to snowshoe into the backcountry while learning about animal tracking and winter ecology; another allows you to hone your skills in ice and snow climbing and building winter shelters.

Many of our destination lodges are open year-round.

We have full-service lodges and huts, plus cabins and campgrounds, dotting the Appalachian Trail and the surrounding area in the Northeast, many of which are open year-round. Cardigan Lodge, located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire on 1,200 protected acres owned and managed by the AMC, offers over 50 miles of well-maintained trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and telemark skiing. For more adventurous souls, the self-service High Cabin, located on the summit of Mt. Cardigan, offers more rustic accommodations plus platform tens with kitchen access inside the cabin. Other lodges open during the winter season include our newest four-season lodge and outdoor recreation center, the Highland Lodge near Bretton Woods in New Hampshire's White Mountains which offers backdoor access to winter recreational activities, and Joe Dodge Lodge, a popular destination nestled at the foot of Mount Washington, also in New Hampshire.
