Part 16 in an ongoing series highlighting Northeast-based gear companies. Equinox Ltd. Designs has been producing lightweight outdoor equipment and custom gear for more than 20 years. It’s all made in the USA, manufactured on-site in Williamsport, Pa., in an old pajama factory on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
The company produces a range of gear, or as the web site declares, “fundamental tools for Earth travelers.” (Astronauts and other celestial travelers will need to shop elsewhere, I guess.) The company’s product line includes everything from tote bags to dog beds to lightweight ponchos and other raingear, but the items that stand out are its ultralight backpacks.
The most intriguing is the ARAS Eagle Pack (pictured above), a very reasonably priced ultralight backpack ($129, 21 ounces) that features an ample 3,200 cubic inches of capacity, as well as a lid pocket and multiple mesh pockets that straddle most of the pack body, as well as a pair of waistbelt pockets. It’s constructed from thin silnylon, but features durable 200-denier ripstop side panels to protect some of its most vulnerable parts from snagging (and tearing) on protruding branches and other trail hazards. The only drawback is its narrow torso fit size range (17″ to 19″), which probably precludes tall people like myself.
Also check out the Parula Ultralite Day Pack, a featherweight bag (7.4 ounces) with 1,050 cubic inches of capacity for only $46.95. You’ll be hard-pressed to find better deals on such ultralight packs anywhere else!
