Ultra High-Calorie Energy Bars

November 6, 2017

If you’re out adventuring in cold weather, you need extra calories to feed the internal furnace of body heat production. To help  you meet this need—and find the most calories contained in a single energy bar wrapper—here are three high-calorie energy bars to add to the list I first put together back in 2010.

First, to recap. Most energy bars contain somewhere between 200 and 300 calories per bar; only a few offer more than 300. (Note that this is a measure of how many calories there are per package, not per ounce.)

Back in 2010, the winners were the Honey Stinger Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Pro, which has since been reduced in size from 3.2 ounces to 1.5 ounces and is no longer a contender; the ProBar Cocoa Pistachio, which is no longer available; and the Bear Valley Pemmican Bar: Carob and Cocoa, which is still an amazing brick of power (440 calories) for a paltry $1.50. (To this list, I would also add the Datrex Blue Ration 3600, a survival bar with a whopping energy density of 150 calories per ounce, more than any other bar.)

So what other single-package energy bombs are available these days? Here are three more for consideration.

Kate’s Real Food Grizzly and Tram bars

These twin offerings both come in at 360 calories per package. The Tram Bar was Kate’s original offering and contains a power mix of organic ingredients, including oats, honey, peanut butter, dried apricots, sunflower and sesame seeds, and more, all sweetened with a dash of milk chocolate. The Grizzly Bar is similar, substituting dark chocolate for milk chocolate. Both run around $3 per bar.

Protein Pleasure MacroBar

I wanted to highlight this company for its commitment to producing a range of nut butter-based bars that are all certified organic, vegan, and gluten-free, even though the Protein Pleasure bar falls just short of the 300-calorie benchmark at 290 calories per package. It’s a peanut butter chocolate mash-up with a hefty dose of plant-based protein (11g protein per 69g bar). Around $3 per bar.

ProBar Meal Bars

The Cocoa Pistachio option may be no more, but ProBar continues to offer a variety of mega-calorie options in its line of organic, gluten-free, non-GMO Meal ProBars, including the ProBar Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip option, which tips the energy scales at 390 calories per 3-ounce package (around $3.50 per bar).

Stay fueled out there!
