Part 17 in an ongoing series highlighting Northeast-based gear companies. We-Flashy produces casual, stylish shirts and sweatshirts that incorporate high-visibility reflective elements for increased visibility while walking, running, or cycling at night. As the company explains on its web site: “We don’t believe that you need to choose between looking like a crossing guard and wearing safer clothing.”
This small Brooklyn-based start-up produces a small line of handmade T-shirts and sweatshirts that incorporate varying amounts of reflective material. Of the lot, the one that catches my eye—so to speak—is the Cube Sweatshirt (pictured left), which features the most extensive reflective material and greatest visibility. (The site also provides the assurance that “You Graphy in this Cube Sweatshirt.”) Style-wise, I like the Reflective Houndstooth Tee (pictured above), which is available in both “unisexy” evergreen and tri-black.
Getting a garment handmade in Brooklyn with pricey reflective material isn’t cheap (Cube Sweatshirt: $115, Houndstooth Tee: $55), but it certainly is distinctive.
Overall, I like the stylish designs of We-Flashy’s garments and the basic premise that it’s possible to create high-visibility clothing that can double as casual around-town wear. However, keep in mind that reflective elements are only one piece of nighttime and low-light safety. Lights and ultrabright colors (which are definitely not stylish) complete the suite of items that will maximize your visibility.
