AMC and Maine Beer Company Team Up for Conservation

To support AMC’s strong conservation and advocacy efforts in Maine, the Maine Beer Company will feature our organization as their 1% For the Planet non-profit this month!

In 2002, AMC embarked on the Maine Woods Initiative, a multi-pronged strategy for land conservation that combines outdoor recreation, nature-based tourism, and ecological protection. Through this endeavor, AMC has:

  • acquired and permanently conserved 75,000 acres of former industrial forestland, including 22,000 acres of ecological reserve,
  • invested $16 million directly into the economy of Piscataquis County, the state’s poorest county, and more than $22 million to the state of Maine,
  • created a 60-mile conservation corridor from Moosehead Lake to Baxter State Park, together with adjacent conserved land, comprising nearly 650,000 contiguous acres of conservation land open to public recreational use,
  • received a recent grant from The Conservation Alliance to build a campaign around the management planning process and highlight new recreation opportunities in the region,
  • and advocated for the designation of the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. We continue to engage our members and supporters in promoting and exploring this area.

The Appalachian Mountain Club is an approved non-profit partner of 1% for the Planet, a global organization that connects individuals and businesses to environmental non-profits they can donate to and support. As a contributing business member of 1% for the Planet, Maine Beer Company selected the AMC as their December 2017 non-profit focus. This feels like a natural partnership given our shared emphasis on Maine conservation efforts and ties to advocacy work around the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. Maine Beer Company has supported the new national monument through a big advocacy push and created the Woods & Waters beer to celebrate its designation.

Boston, Berkshire, Worcester, Potomac, NY-NoJ, Delaware Valley and Maine Chapters hosting tap take-overs this December

To celebrate our shared focus on protecting the environment and encouraging people to get outdoors, AMC and Maine Beer Company will be hosting eight tap take-overs across our region. A portion of the proceeds from each of these events will benefit AMC’s conservation work. Join us for a tap take-over at:

Maine Beer Company’s mission statement hangs in their Freeport, Maine brewery and outlines their business and brewing philosophy. Founding the company in 2009, David & Daniel Kleban wanted to prove that you could run a business while still doing what’s right. In addition to donating 1% of their profits to the 1% for the Planet organization, MBC has shown a great commitment to environmental sustainability. From powering their brewery off of renewable energy sources, to sourcing their ingredients from local companies, Maine Beer Company is living up to their company’s slogan.
