Greetings from Pinkham Notch! Today is the Vernal Equinox meaning that the length of day and night are equal; which also means the days are getting longer for more opportunity to be outside to hike, climb and ski! This morning we woke up to a beautiful sunrise with some alpineglow on the Presidential Range. The forecast for today is quite different than yesterday, although those winds will be picking up again over the weekend and some more snow is in the forecast as well!
This could not be more true for here in the mountains where we experience much more extreme weather than the valleys.
The trails can vary day-to-day at this time of the year with the warming and cooling events that we have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks and more that we will continue to experience. I was caretaking up at the Hermit Lake Shelter the other night and the next morning we were still experiencing 70 mph winds and windchills of -45; while the week before I was able to rock climb at Square Ledge!
The Winter Lion Head trail is still open to summit Mt. Washington and the use of crampons and a mountaineering axe is needed. On warm days you may break through (post-holing) so on those warm days you will need to take out the snowshoes to help with not breaking through, and after those cold nights you may find the trails to be a bit slick so light traction devices such as microspikes will be handy! Feel free to give us a call before you head out to get a good idea of the equipment you may need!
As always you can check AMC Conditions for the latest report from the snow stakes and/or call us here at Pinkham to see what we’re seeing out our windows and for the best trail advice we can give you!
Starting March 23rd we are going to be starting the Bed and Breakfast Tuckerman specials here at Joe Dodge Lodge again for $49!
