Welcome to the AMC potomac Chapter
2018 AMC Fall Gathering
This year’s AMC Fall Gathering takes place in Woodstock, CT on October 12-14. Join us for relaxed fun, friendship, and adventure in a forested autumn setting.
Camp Woodstock is located on the shores of Black Pond and offers heated cabins, unheated yurts, and a high and dry campsite with near by parking for cars. The surrounding hills and dales offer hiking, biking, and
paddling options led by experienced local leaders. Onsite, there will be informative talks and activities for all, including; archery, arts and crafts, a rock climbing wall, and bouldering. Basketball and wiffle-ball equipment are also available. Tours of nearby wineries, antique shops, and historic landmarks are leisurely daytime alternatives. A live band performance of the Truck Stop Troubadours will round out the day on Saturday.
Have you been enjoying an outdoor activity with a group led by an experienced leader, and wondering how you could become a leader of a hiking, paddling, biking, or other outdoor activity? If your concern about knowing what it takes to lead an outdoor activity is holding you back from pursuing this goal, then this leadership training sponsored by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Potomac Chapter is what you need. Leadership is an association between an individual (the leader) and a group of people sharing a common interest or goal, with the leader guiding the group’s behavior. When you address the issue of outdoor leadership, you must consider the characteristics of a leader and group members; the outdoor environment in which an activity takes place; and a group’s objectives for an activity. In the AMC Potomac Chapter’s 1-day leadership training, we have the following goals: • To provide information for leaders to assist them in minimizing risk while leading enjoyable AMC trips; • To raise each potential leader’s level of outdoor leadership awareness; • To build confidence and enthusiasm about leading AMC trips; and • To teach leaders how to plan, organize, and lead AMC trips. Pursue your dream to lead outdoor activities and join us at the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Woodbridge Campus on October 20, 2018 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. There is plenty of free parking on site (on weekends) in lots B-1 and B-2. Registration is mandatory and a $20 fee must be paid in advance using this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amc-outdoor-activity-leadership-training-tickets-50453138696 . This fee is refundable by the AMC Potomac Chapter for all attendees that complete 2 outdoor activities as a certified Chapter outdoor leader. Look for the Chapter’s Map and Compass skill training being held the next day, October 21, 2018 at Sky Meadow State Park, VA as it is provided free for all who pay here for the Outdoor Leadership Training. You must register separately for that training event, but will not have to pay the fee.
