Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The Potomac Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club was established in 1984. It is the southernmost of 12 regional AMC chapters supporting outdoor and conservation activities from Maine to Virginia. The Chapter's 2,000+ members reside in Maryland, northern Virginia, as well as in the District of Columbia. The AMC Potomac Chapter outdoor activities include day-hiking, backpacking, paddling, biking, and social get-togethers. Our Chapter's activities are open to the public and can be found on the AMC Activity Database
or Potomac Chapter's Meetup.com page
. Most of the Chapter outings do not require AMC membership, although it is encouraged because of the many other benefits derived. AMC members are also encouraged to participate in and assist in the management of the Chapter's activities.
