Certification Requirements for Outdoor Activity Leaders

To become an AMC Potomac Chapter Outdoor Activity Leaders, candidates must:

  • Be eighteen (18) years of age or older

  • Be a current AMC member

  • Be certified in first aid as follows

  • Basic First Aid or higher for day-hike Leaders

  • Wilderness First Aid or higher for Leaders of overnight outdoor activities that are away from their cars.

Candidates with no prior experience leading outdoor activities must also:

  • Co-lead an outdoor activity by assisting a certified AMC Potomac Leader in conducting the activity; and

  • Lead an outdoor activity with the presence of a certified AMC Potomac Leader, while doing all the planning; and

  • Complete an AMC-sponsored leadership training.

Candidates with prior experience leading outdoor activities for other organizations must also:

  • Lead an outdoor activity with the presence of a certified AMC Potomac Leader, while doing all the planning.

Upon fulfillment of the applicable requirements above, the candidate will be certified by the AMC Potomac Leadership Chair to lead Chapter outdoor activities. New Leaders are eligible for reimbursement of one year of AMC membership and the cost of any leadership and/or first aid training taken to meet these requirements after leading two Chapter activities. Continuing Requirement

All AMC Potomac Outdoor Activity Leaders must lead a minimum of two (2) Chapter activities annually to maintain their Leadership certification.
