Nature Based tourism

One of the goals of the Maine Woods Initiative is to realize the Moosehead/100-Mile Wilderness region as a world-class outdoor recreation destination. Over the past 20 years, this region, like many places in rural Maine, has seen declining employment in the forest products sector leading to higher than average unemployment and poverty rates. In the same period there have been significant strides in land conservation. We believe that this stable base of conserved lands provides a key ingredient for the development and growth of the region’s nature-based tourism economy. The forest products sector will continue to be important to the region’s economy, but by creating quality, authentic, and sustainable outdoor destinations and experiences, we believe that the outdoor recreation sector will play a critical role in local economies and communities alongside the forest products industry.

AMC’s lands provide trails, lodging, camping, boating, and lands open for hunting and fishing and we promote the region through local, regional and national media outlets. But in order to fully realize the region’s potential for nature-based tourism, AMC works in partnership with landowners, businesses, state agencies, and other non-profit organizations across several important joint efforts:

Maine Woods Discovery

AMC is a member of Maine Woods Discovery, a standards-based marketing cooperative whose endorsed providers guarantee quality vacation experiences. Endorsed providers are some of Maine’s most sought after and respected outfitters and resorts, offering paddling, hiking, fishing, biking, rafting, wildlife watching and, in the wintertime, dogsledding, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

We believe a new National Monument in the Katahdin region with investment in recreational infrastructure is an important opportunity for the region. The AMC supports the creation of a National Park and adjacent National Recreation Area on lands east of Baxter State Park, and designation of a National Monument as a step toward that outcome. Read our public statement (April 2016) and visit our Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument website.

Piscataquis Waterfalls Tour – Piscataquis Tourism Development Authority

AMC is a partner in the creation of the Piscataquis Waterfalls Tour – highlighting some of the most scenic waterfalls in the region if not the state!

Moosehead Region Chamber of Commerce

AMC is a proud supporter of the Chamber, many of its events, and our staff serve on the board.

Maine Woods Consortium

AMC is a member of the Maine Woods Consortium (MWC) – an open association of non-profit organizations, businesses, and government agencies dedicated to advancing a “triple bottom line” approach (economy, environment, community) to development and conservation in the Maine Woods region.
