When can I find a caretaker at an AMC Backcountry Site?

The Appalachian Mountain Club backcountry campsites in the White Mountains and the Mahoosuc’s (14 sites) are open year round, including access to shelters, platforms, and toilets.

We staff and de-staff 9 campsites on a staggered seasonal schedule from Memorial Day weekend to Columbus Day weekend. A caretaker is available during this time period. They collect a $10 per person/night fee to off-set the costs of managing the site. They are in charge of composting human waste, trail maintenance and construction in the area, and responding to search and rescues, which all strive to limit the overall human impact at each site.

If you are traveling in a large group (6 or more people), please use our Group Notification System to let us know of your plans.
