AMC's Maine Woods Initiative
Maine Woods Initiative Area Map
Success Story
Maine Moose AMC has already protected the 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property, buffering 25 miles of the AT and protecting a native brook trout fishery and 16 remote ponds. Our property is open to the public for recreational use. AMC has conveyed a permanent conservation on this property to the Maine Bureau of Public Lands. Learn more about the Initiative >>
What’s At Stake
A decline in the traditional forest products industry has led to significant changes in land ownership. Resulting development threatens the wild and remote character of this region, as well as traditional public access and outdoor recreation.

What We’re Doing

  • Permanently protecting 100,000 acres, including a 25,000 acre ecological reserve, while preserving public access for recreation.
  • Creating new outdoor recreation opportunities and promote nature-based tourism through our Maine Wilderness Lodges and growing trails network.
  • Getting every student in Piscataquis County outdoors through our Moosehead Schools Project.
  • Using sustainable forestry methods on our property, hiring local logging crews and supplying local mills.
