Success Story
Roach Ponds Tract. Photo: Shannon LeRoy With its purchase of the 29,500-acre Roach Ponds tract, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), has played a key role in the completion of a 63-mile-long corridor of conservation land open to public recreational use stretching from AMC’s Katahdin Iron Works property near Greenville north to Baxter State Park. What’s At Stake
A decline in the traditional forest products industry has led to significant changes in land ownership. Resulting development threatens the wild and remote character of this region, as well as traditional public access and outdoor recreation.

What We’re Doing

  • Permanently protecting 100,000 acres, including a 25,000 acre ecological reserve, while preserving public access for recreation.
  • Creating new outdoor recreation opportunities and promote nature-based tourism through our Maine Wilderness Lodges and growing trails network.
  • Getting every student in Piscataquis County outdoors through our Moosehead Schools Project.
  • Using sustainable forestry methods on our property, hiring local logging crews and supplying local mills.
