Northeast Trail Stewardship
1919 brought about AMC’s first professional trail crew for the White Mountains Region, focused on keeping hiking trails open and clear for the early 20th century recreationist. As hiking has become more popular and trails easier to access by car, trails are now being used at a rate far greater than the early trail building pioneers could’ve imagined.
Significant soil erosion, watershed protection, and other natural resource impacts play key roles for AMC professional trail crews throughout the Northeast as they balance efforts to protect our natural areas, maintain high quality trails, and provide trail systems that meet the expectations of a wide variety of user groups.
