Experience the 2024 Solar Eclipse with AMC
On Monday, April 8, 2024, northern New Hampshire will experience a total solar eclipse. Though solar eclipses occur somewhere on earth every eighteen months on average, they recur at any given place only once every 400 years. Don’t miss this extremely rare chance to experience the total eclipse in New Hampshire!
When you book a stay at the Highland Center at Crawford Notch or Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch, you’ll be an hour’s drive from the eclipse’s path of totality. Take note: Maine's lodges will be closed during the eclipse. Check out our viewing the eclipse in Maine guide for other ways to enjoy in Maine.
Enjoy comfortable accommodations and a weekend’s worth of astronomical programming for the whole family leading up to eclipse day. If the weather’s uncooperative, you can stay snug indoors and watch the eclipse on a live stream with a catered lunch and hot drinks.
Here’s a sampling of the activities that will be offered free to overnight guests at the Highland Center and Joe Dodge Lodge:
- Evening presentations about the night sky
- Eclipse-themed films
- An inflatable planetarium
- Guided walks
- Build your own viewfinder crafts
Dinner and all activities are included in your nightly rate, and breakfast and lunch are available to purchase on-site. Guests who book a stay between April 6-9, 2024 will receive a gift bag at check-in containing solar glasses, AMC swag, and homemade eclipse cookies!
Highland Center
Built on the site of the historic Crawford House hotel and nestled at the southern base of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch, the Highland Center is our premier White Mountain lodge.
Eclipse activities include:
Hear how Coyote becomes the moon (Kalispel), how Grandmother Spider steals the Sun (Muskogee/Creek), how Fisher goes to Sky Land and changes into the Big Dipper (Anishinabe/Chippewa), and how Nagah, the mountain goat, becomes the North Star (Paiute). This performance uses songs, chants, native instruments, and stories that are carefully chosen from among the native cultures found throughout North America and beyond.
Michael Caduto shares the science and legends surrounding this total solar eclipse of 2024. From exploring how the relatively small moon can literally block out the sun during the eclipse to how native cultures have honored this rare phenomenon, Michael combines scientific explanations and a sense of wonder to enhance our experience of this day.
Joe Dodge Lodge
For more than 100 years, Joe Dodge Lodge has welcomed travelers, adventure seekers, and conservation stewards to New Hampshire’s Pinkham Notch. At the base of Mount Washington, surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, Joe Dodge Lodge is the basecamp for some of best outdoor adventures in the region.
